I do often track down a favorite players rig and try and re-assemble it with my tonelab to see if I can get in the ball park. Which takes me back to the reasons why other's patches don't work: different equipment and different taste.
Once I did download MANY user made patches for some computer modeling software, but most all of it was horrible. So if I'm going to have to fiddle with all the settings anyways, I might as well just start from scratch. They were made with someone else's taste and someone else's equipment.
And the main reason that I avoid them is they weren't made with my guitar in mind. I find that the ones that ship with the units are too effects heavy for my taste.
